Chapter Fourteen

Virgil had just come in from searching every square inch of Gibbs City for the maniac setting fire to his town when the phone rang. He hadn’t slept since Cora left because this mess with the fires had to be stopped. People were talking about closing down their businesses and leaving town.

“Hello.”

“Virgil,” Cora said in a voice too high and filled with panic.

“What’s wrong?”

“Dan has threatened to take Jack.”

“You have legal guardianship. That’ll hold up in court.”

“But, what if he just takes him away and we can’t find him?”

“That’s not going to happen. I’ll put a few guys watching the school and I’ll contact Batcher to put a tail on Martin. He heads this way, we’ll know quick enough.”

She let out a deep sigh. “I’m so frightened.”

“I know, sweetheart. But, it’s probably more talk than Dan actually doing anything.”

“That’s what Earl claims.”

“Listen to him.” Virgil knew that the piece of paper Cora had held little opinion when it came to taking a child away from a parent but he could never tell her that. The judicial system felt children belonged with their parents. But he couldn’t bring himself to tell her. “What happened at your mother’s trial?”

“Good news. The judge sentenced her to ten years in a minimum-security facility. She might get out in seven years.”

Virgil wanted Clare locked away from Cora for the rest of her life. “What’s so great about that?”

A long silence filled the airways. “I won’t be worrying my head off that my mother is going through what happened to me.”

That was true. He knew Cora, and how she felt about people suffering. “I’m sorry. It’s just I wished she’d been that considerate toward you.”

“That’s the past, Virgil. At least now I know she’s going to be okay.”

“What’s your plans?”

“Earl and I are grabbing a snack. After that I’ll say goodbye to mother, then we’re catching the afternoon bus back home.”

“Good, I’ve missed you and want you here safe with me.”

“Any news on who’s setting the fires.”

Virgil ran his hands through his hair. “Not a damn thing. I’m completely stumped. Gene McKinney is coming tomorrow. Maybe he’ll have some advice.”

“Okay, I love you. See you soon.”

“Be careful.”

Virgil went to Maggie’s and picked up Jack. Mrs. Winters had come down with a cold and couldn’t babysit him while Cora was gone, so Maggie had stepped in.

He’d planned for them to go to Betty’s Diner for a burger and fries. Cora would throw a fit if she knew the way they’d been eating since she left. No home cooked meals unless Maggie came up with them. But after investigating all day he wasn’t interested in cooking. Besides, as soon as they finished supper and listened to Jack’s program they were off to bed in minutes. While Jack slept soundly, Virgil laid awake late into the night.

They drove to the diner and ordered dinner. Maybe Cora wouldn’t be happy, but Jack was delighted. He tore into his burger like a boy who’d gone hungry for days. Grinning, Virgil enjoyed his meal, then paid.
